crazy in the OT

I just finished reading 1 and 2nd  Samuel.  I have to tell you that I have had very mixed emotions.  These Old Testament people were crazy!  Killing and more killing, concubines, wars, grudges, oaths, emotions flying.  This culture was UNLIKE anything I have ever known, and yet this kind of life-style was ALL that they ever knew.

How did God bless David in the midst of all of this savage brutality?  I have come to realize that God is a God that transcends cultures.  He chooses to use people in situations that I cannot relate to.  At the end of the book, David gives this amazing tribute to God for saving him and making him so successful.  I think there are several reasons that God used David and called him a "man after God's own heart."   First of all, DAVID was crazy enough to RECKLESSLY BELIEVE GOD and had amazing COURAGE to do whatever was necessary. Secondly, David knew how to praise God in detail, giving God all of the credit.  And finally, God had flat out chosen him--God made a covenant with David.

In the middle of the world we live in--a world that some might call "crazy"-- what would make God call us a "people after His own heart?"  First of all, He has already chosen us and promised if we would consecrate ourselves (set ourselves apart for Him) that He would do amazing things among us.   If we would RECKLESSLY BELIEVE GOD and give him all the credit, we would see Him do more than we could ever imagine!  I think God might just like a little CRAZY.

  2. Amy,
Your words of wisdom are such a great encouragement to me. While we have not met, Brian meets periodically with my husband and has been such a great mentor for him. Vince was on staff at a local church until his position was cut because they could not budget for it in 2009 because giving was so bad in 2008. Your post reminds me of what we are experiencing right now as God has been doing some amazing things in the way of providing during this time when Vince is out of work and we are having to have faith literally on a day by day basis in order to stay in our house and pay our bills. I have some of the details on my blog under the post “And The Miracles Just Keep On Coming.”
Just wanted you to know I have learned a lot from you just in reading your blog. Thanks for sharing all God is doing in your life and what He is teaching you as you raise your boys. I have 3 boys (4, 3, and 4 months) and I love to hear the wisdom of other moms and learn from them in hopes that I will be a better mom. Thank you for all you and Brian do at West Ridge. It has been great being back now that Vince is not currently on staff at another church!

  3. I agree with you and what I also love about David's story is that God called him "a man after his own heart" even after David sinned against him.

  4. I think sometimes that the tearm "live outside the box" or "think our side the box" is how we need to be in this world, people have to see we are different and it is because of the God we serve! Let's get CRAZEY FOR JESUS :)
